Traditional Medicine between Science and Art
At the beginning of the human civilization, traditional medicine was practiced by means of experiment. In time, as men kept experimenting, they improved the techniques applied to the sick people. In their search, the Egyptians discovered more and more about the anatomy, the physiology and the pathology of the human body. They treated external conditions of the body, such as eczemas, fractures, and open wounds. As time went by, they discovered how they could treat various headaches, aches of the digestive system as well as of other systems. In their treatments, they used medicinal herbs that acted perfectly in alleviating the pain.
The apogee of the Egyptian medicine was the discovery of the mummification process. The mummification techniques are still an unknown for the mankind, especially since mummies were discovered that are older than 10,000 years. There are countless hypotheses about how the Egyptians did the mummification. However, none of the hypotheses is correct, because our days' experiments have proven that a body cannot be preserved for longer than 5 years.
For instance, one technique consisted of taking out the brain through the nose, by drilling the skull and thus putrefaction would be stopped. But this theory is not supported, because mummies are intact, not just their skull.
