Mountain Bike - Disc Brakes or Linear Brakes?
Hi,
I'm buying a mountain bike mostly for bush tracks and walking tracks but also some road. The guy at the bike shop suggested that I don't need to pay extra for Disc brakes and that Linear brakes will be adequete for this type of riding. He said unless You pay for a bike $1000 + and get hydraulic disc brakes there is very little difference in performance, and this would only really be necessary if I was doing serious off-track riding.
What are your opinions and suggestions?
Nobody really "needs" disc brakes. It wasn't that long ago when they weren't even available on a bicycle and "V" brakes were all the rage. Before that it was cantilever brakes, and before that, calipers like you see on road bikes. My point is that the style of brakes never stopped anyone from riding off road. (no pun intended)
I have ridden on very rugged terrain with my old bike for years, and it had Shimano V brakes. They were never a problem. However, I got a new bike about a year ago and it has disc brakes. They're not hydraulic, they're mechanical ~ Avid BB7's, and they do work better than the V brakes. They have more stopping power, which means my hands and forearms don't get as tired during long technical descents.
My suggestion is to buy the bike that you like. Make sure that it fits you well, and go for the highest level of components you can afford.
Hope that helps...
